A successful ERP implementation, like all large and complex projects, requires a ready-aim-fire approach. For ERP efforts, this is a series of phases, starting with an initial ERP assessment that determines the goals, costs, and timing. The next phase is the ERP selection, where business requirements are developed and the appropriate ERP solution is selected. Following product selection, the next phase is implementation preparation. During this phase, a number of critical pieces of the ERP solution are accomplished, including the design of a new chart of accounts, details of integrations that will be required, the selection of the implementation vendor, and the negotiation and finalization of licensing and professional services agreements.

At this point, the formal implementation process begins. This process will vary by implementation partner. However, it normally includes detailed design, configuration, initial testing, user acceptance testing, and go live. The key to a successful implementation is going through all of the steps, having the right expertise and experience, dedicating the right resources, and staying within the defined scope.
