Lori has found that not all CPA firms providing non-profit organizations with tax assistance pass on their knowledge of the steps publicly supported institutions need to take to maintain their tax-exempt status. She has helped numerous non-profits comply with taxing authorities’ rules and regulations, not only for them to file correctly, but also for these organizations to understand how organizational change is necessary to retain non-profit tax status.
As principal of SC&H Group’s Tax Services for non-profit clients, Lori supervises a professional staff dedicated to non-profit tax consulting and preparation of Forms 990 and 990-T. She also assists clients in obtaining non-profit status, consults on tax structuring for non-profits, and advises and acts as liaison with taxing authorities on behalf of non-profit organizations.
Lori also provides ASC 740-10 (formerly FAS 109/FIN 48) provision services for public and middle market companies, ensuring client accuracy in financial statements and regulatory reporting for income tax expensing, deferred tax, and uncertain positions. Her tax expertise also extends to corporate tax compliance and consulting as well as mergers and acquisitions, for which she provides tax due diligence for business combinations.
Prior to joining SC&H, Lori was a tax and audit supervisor with a “Big 4” accounting firm, where she provided ASC 740-10 tax provision services, and performed audits for a varied client base. Lori has served Fortune 500 companies, start-up businesses, and middle market public and private companies in industries such as healthcare, technology, software, manufacturing, distribution, and real estate. Her tax work with non-profits includes engagements with foundations, museums, hospitals and educational institutions.
Lori earned her B.B.A. in Accounting from Loyola University, where she graduated with highest honors and was awarded the Lybrand Medal of Honor. She is a Certified Public Accountant licensed to practice in Maryland, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Greater Baltimore Technology Council, and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA), for which she serves on the Federal Tax Committee. She has presented professionally on non-profit tax and corporate tax issues and current topics for SC&H Group’s client seminar series, for Lorman Educational Services, and for other industry groups, recently addressing local business and management leaders on “Health Care Reform: What Every CEO Needs to Know.”
Lori has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations, for which she also volunteered her time and services. Currently, she is a board member of the Central Maryland Meals on Wheels.
