Investing in Our Community
Volunteering
We encourage our team to be catalysts for good both during and outside of work hours, actively creating and sharing opportunities to get involved.
Nonprofit Board Service
Many SC&Hers serve on nonprofit boards in their communities to help guide the organization’s future, ensure adequate resources, and recruit others to get involved.
Charitable Contributions
We provide financial support for several community organizations, focusing on four primary causes: human services, health, youth services, and the environment.
“Helping one person might not change the world, but it could change the world for one person. Community service teaches us that, regardless of your title, tenure, or service line, our responsibility isn’t just to ourselves but to everyone around us. It’s about creating a better world, together. ”

Impact by the Numbers
Since 2019, we have intentionally tracked our firm’s community efforts to help us measure the overall success of our impact initiatives and set the bar higher each year. SC&H gathers this data from our team members through an annual firm-wide survey. By remaining transparent and sharing our data, we hope to showcase the work of some outstanding organizations, recognize colleagues’ contributions, and encourage others to get involved.
Primary Cause Areas
Day of Service Spotlight
In June 2024, 265 SC&H volunteers dedicated their time to support the mission of nine nonprofits across Maryland and Virginia during our annual Day of Service (DOS). From preparing meals for the elderly to weeding and mulching topiary gardens, we totaled over 1,000 hours of service and infused more than $34,700 into the community. This event is highly anticipated each year, as it allows our team to support their local community while strengthening connections with their colleagues. Thank you to Business Volunteers Maryland for partnering with us for over 15 years and helping facilitate this annual firm-wide experience. The impact we made in just half a day for this year’s organizations was truly rewarding.
Organizations We Partnered With
“I like giving back to the community as a firm because we can cultivate relationships with co-workers, get to know each other outside of the workplace, and help the community knock out tasks/projects faster than normal so we can continue making the world a better place ”

Giving Back in Action
To continually foster an engaged and collaborative culture, where our team promotes the initiatives that are important to them and to the success of our firm, we developed a series of committees. Each committee is responsible for identifying and progressing strategic objectives that align with our firm’s core values, enrich relationships and partnerships, and provide opportunities for our people to advance their leadership skills.
Polar Bear Plunge
In 2024, more than 20 SC&H employees braved the cold and took the plunge to support Special Olympics Maryland. One employee, Billy Krueger, went above and beyond, participating in the Super Plunge, where he plunged 24 times in 24 hours! This annual event is crucial in supporting 15,588 athletes and unified teammates throughout Maryland and fostering inclusive environments through sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Monthly Dinners
Every month, a small group of SC&H volunteers plan, cook, and serve a home-cooked meal at the Ronald McDonald House in downtown Baltimore City. After preparing a hearty home-cooked meal, SC&Hers can eat with and get to know the families they cooked for. Giving each family a small sense of home during a trying time is what makes this monthly event so fulfilling.
Elf Week
Every year, the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree initiative gathers and distributes toys and clothing to underprivileged children during the holiday season. SC&H Volunteers spent the day organizing a large influx of donations by age and type of donation, creating stockings for each child, and carefully picking out gifts based on the child’s wish list. The Angel Tree program ensured gifts for over 2,000 children were distributed to families in need.
Holiday Gift Drive
Every year during the holidays, Ulman gathers gifts for families with a member undergoing active cancer treatment and facing financial difficulties. In 2024, SC&H was matched with a family from Essex, MD, as part of the Ulman Holiday Gift Drive. We love supporting this initiative every year because of the joy we bring to the family when they receive their presents.
Finance Park
Throughout the year, SC&H volunteers helped local middle and high school students develop critical thinking skills during an interactive simulation. Through Junior Achievement’s Finance Park, students learned to create a balanced household budget and manage their monthly bills. This opportunity allowed us to use our expertise to further financial literacy education in our community.
Wreaths Out
Wreaths Across America is committed to commemorating fallen U.S. Veterans, paying tribute to active servicemembers, and instilling in children the importance of freedom. A group of SC&Hers from our Tysons Corner office participated in the cleanup of wreaths placed on the heroes’ graves at Arlington National Cemetery during the Wreaths Out event in January.
Zoo Run
In August, SC&H team members and their families participated in the 15th annual Casey Cares 5k run/1-mile walk at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore! Proceeds from this event helped support critically ill children and their families.
Gift Drive
The adopt-a-family program is dedicated to helping children and families who need clothing, food, and toys during the holiday season. Every year, the SC&H team at the Tyson’s Corner office eagerly anticipates selecting the best gifts for our assigned family. Bringing holiday cheer to a family in need reminds us how blessed we truly are.
“As a lifelong Maryland resident and former business owner, one of the main reasons I joined SC&H was to be part of a firm that is truly dedicated to giving back to our community. ”

A Word from our CEO
At SC&H, creating opportunities for our people to give back isn’t just something we value – it’s a part of our DNA. Looking back on our impact in 2024, I’m inspired by the commitment and compassion our colleagues continue to bestow upon their communities. Their generosity knows no bounds, and it is inspiring to see the impact our team has made on those around them. Our team went above and beyond in 2024, devoting 4,958 hours across 141 organizations. While I’m blown away by these impressive numbers, I’m even more excited about how the relationships we’ve built will foster new opportunities in the future. This is all thanks to the passionate, caring, and dedicated individuals here at SC&H. I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to our colleagues, business partners, and community collaborators. None of our success would be possible without their selflessness and dedication to uplifting others. I cannot wait to see how we continue to serve our communities in 2025 and what exciting advancements we can achieve together.
