This session focused on current changes to revenue recognition and proposed changes to the Not-For-Profit model for financial statement presentation. Other topics included the new proposed lease standard and its implications on NFP’s, as well as the latest tax pronouncements impacting non-profit organizations.

General Session: Fraud: What You Need to Know as a Nonprofit Organization

Joe and Russell’s session discussed awareness around the risks that could potentially impact nonprofit organizations. The presentation focused on the different types of fraud that could occur, red flags that participants should be aware of and what controls should be implemented to minimize the risk of fraud. Additionally, they covered “best practice” ethics and compliance initiatives that can help to make employees more aware of the potential for fraud in the workplace, give them specific things they can watch for that may be an indication that fraud is occurring, and provide them with the confidence to report potential fraud without the fear of retaliation

  • Endowment Spending: Designing a Policy that Works

Nonprofits are continuously under pressure to balance current and future needs when determining the purpose, structure, and governance of their endowment assets. Even when the appropriate strategy and process are in place to align saving and investing with long term goals, one piece of the puzzle is often secondary – spending. This session addressed the importance of applying a disciplined strategy to how an organization spends its endowed resources and how that spending impacts current budgets, future initiatives, capital projects, investment strategies, and administrative expenses.

Closing Session: Managing Health and Welfare Plans In Light of Affordable Care Act Mandates

Bill provided a brief update of the Affordable Care Act’s impact on health insurance over the past few years and what still needs to be done by plan administrators to comply with the law. Topics included what changes should be made to plan provisions/practices and what you need to do to comply in the future. Additionally an overview of penalties, taxes and reporting requirements were discussed
